What is Biologic Therapy?
The Diagnostic Pain Center in Austin offers Biologic Therapy that contains growth factors, platelets, and other molecules from your own blood which help the body with healing. Biologic Therapy is a safe procedure when conducted by a trained professional in a sterile environment. Complications are rare but include and are not limited to: bleeding, bruising, and infection. A majority of patients return to usual activities within the next day, but some pain may be felt for up to 1 week. Biologic Therapy comes from the concentrated parts of your own blood. The natural healing takes place with the help of certain blood products such as platelets, neutrophils, monocyte macrophage, fibroblasts, endothelial cells. Biologic therapy may be used to treat various acute and chronic pain conditions such as rotator cuff tear, tendonitis, muscle tears, sprain, trigger points, meniscus tear of the knee, mild to moderate degenerative arthritis of various joints, & disorders of the spine – especially facet joints.
At Your Biologic Therapy Session
Approximately 10 mL (2 teaspoons) of blood will be taken from your vein. Blood is placed into a centrifuge to concentrate the healing components. Under sterile technique, local anesthetic will be used to numb the skin and the area of injection, and imaging will be used to inject the biologic treatment to the target. Following needle removal, you will rest for 15 minutes in the exam room. Results with biologic therapy vary from patient to patient and some may have profound benefits with a single injection, however studies show that outcomes are superior with a series of three injections.
